Monday Morning Rambles: Aparigraha

I know you  must be wondering what "Aparigraha" means and what it has to do with today's post but trust me, it will all come together.

Yesterday, I headed into Brooklyn to spend some time with Amber. About a month ago, I found out that she was moving and I had to go see her (and Chili) before they left...sad panda. We had a great time catching up and enjoying each others company while we played with furbabies.

(top left is when we first met, 4 years ago and bottom right was yesterday...)

Everything was going great until it was time to say goodbye.

The moment that we hugged, I felt the tears coming. My face started to scrunch up into "ugly cry" and I had to quickly leave before I looked like a crazy person on the bus.

While on the bus ride home, I began to think about her moving, and my friend Gigi moving away a couple of years ago. I instantly became sad because these two women are my close friends and having them so far away, pretty much sucks. Then I remembered that I have made so many new friends this past year in yoga teacher training and that got me to thinking of Aparigraha (seeeee follow the bouncing ball).

Aparigraha is the last of the five Yamas (physical disciplines) of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. It means non attachment, non possessiveness, and non accumulation. In this world nothing is constant and we have to continue to evolve and grow...and sometimes that means saying good-bye to friends in order to make room for new people to enter your life. Imagine having an ex and not completely letting them go...does that leave room for a new potential of love to enter your life?

Now, don't misunderstand me: I not am letting my friendship with Amber and Gigi drift away but I do have some people in my life that I once considered friends whom I need to send off with love and light. Friendships fade just as relationships do and that is okay. I believe that certain people come into your life to serve a purpose at that time and when that moment passes, perhaps that friendship does as well...leaving room for new encounters to come.

Namaste...
